Konecranes to supply 170-tonne crane for Hafslund Kraft's Hemsil 3 hydropower expansion in Norway

Konecranes has received an order from Hafslund Kraft AS, Norway’s second-largest power producer, to deliver a 170-tonne double girder overhead crane for the Hemsil 3 hydropower project in Hallingdal, Norway. The order was booked in January 2026, with delivery and installation planned for 2027.

Hemsil 3 is the most significant hydropower capacity addition in the Hallingdal region in recent years. The project includes the construction of a new underground powerhouse to accommodate a third turbine and generator unit, a new dam with intake and a new water infrastructure arranged parallel to the Hemsil 2 plant. Once operational, Hemsil 3 will add approximately 110 GWh of annual renewable energy production, increasing the total output of the Hemsil facility to around 700 GWh per year. The project forms part of Hafslund Kraft’s long-term investment program in renewable energy infrastructure.

The order is comprised of a 170-tonne double girder overhead bridge crane equipped with 20-tonne and 5-tonne auxiliary hoists, covering design, manufacturing, crane rails, power supply, installation, commissioning, testing, certification and operator training.

The crane will be used for the installation and long-term maintenance of heavy equipment within the underground powerhouse, including single-piece lifting of the generator rotor – one of the most demanding lifts in a hydropower facility.

Key features include frequency-controlled motions, wireless radio control with backup pendant, a redundant hoisting brake, Sway Control, overload protection with digital load display and LED lighting, all specified for safe and precise operation in a confined underground environment.

“Underground powerhouse cranes must operate reliably in confined conditions while handling extremely heavy and critical components over decades. Konecranes has extensive experience in these environments, and the solution specified for Hemsil 3 is designed to meet these demands with a strong focus on safety and long-term performance,” said Jens Björk, Process Cranes Sales Manager, Industrial Equipment, Konecranes.
