Konecranes delivers automated gantry travel for A-RTGs, enabling mixed-traffic yard operations without redesign

Konecranes is taking automated RTG operations to the next level with a fully automated gantry long-travel feature for mixed-traffic container yards. The solution improves safety and operational efficiency and is now available both for new Konecranes A-RTGs and as a retrofit for existing fleets.

With the Konecranes A-RTG 2.0 concept, Konecranes presented the vision for fully automated gantry travel without human supervision or restrictive fencing around the truck lane. Considerable development and testing efforts have turned this concept into a reality where multiple sites are already running the automated gantry and the solution is now available for wider deployment, both as a feature for new equipment and as a retrofit for existing fleets.

The automated gantry travel system enhances both safety and operational efficiency in terminal operations. The solution provides multiple layers of detection: long-range 3D lidars detect large objects up to 50 meters ahead, enabling early detection and controlled deceleration. At close range, a safety-rated laser scanner provides object detection and supports stopping when required. Combined with safety encoder feedback and mechanical protective covers, the system supports reliable gantry travel and helps reduce collision risks in daily operations.

"Automating gantry long travel reduces manual workload and allows operators to focus where they are needed, while maintaining safe operation in mixed traffic environments," says Ville Mannari, Technology Director, Port Solutions, Konecranes.

The feature has been designed in line with Konecranes' modular product principles and is available as a stand-alone system. It can be retrofitted to any Konecranes A-RTG, giving terminal operators a practical route to expanding automation capability without replacing their existing crane infrastructure.

The automated gantry long travel function is PLd safety-rated according to ISO 13849-1 and has been verified against ISO 3691-4 for driverless industrial vehicles, supporting deployment in highly regulated markets including Europe.

This launch is part of Konecranes' Path to Port Automation, which offers container terminals a comprehensive, step-by-step roadmap to full automation, improving the productivity and safety of their equipment, regardless of the brand, in manageable steps at their own pace.
