Konecranes and Port Newark Container Terminal celebrate commissioning of hybrid straddle carrier fleet upgrades at expanded Newark terminal

Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) has marked the commissioning of its latest fleet of Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle carriers, a key step in its long-term expansion and modernization program. The milestone is part of the opening of PNCT's new $28 million state-of-the-art maintenance facility, supporting the terminal’s ongoing capacity growth and operational efficiency.
These investments form part of PNCT’s broader strategy to increase capacity, improve operational efficiency, support a skilled union workforce and advance environmental sustainability at one of the busiest container terminals on the U.S. East Coast. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, held at PNCT’s facility in Newark, New Jersey, highlighted the role of infrastructure and fleet modernization in preparing the terminal for future growth while maintaining efficient daily operations.
“Modernizing our fleet and infrastructure is a key part of reducing emissions and improving operational performance across the terminal,” said Jim Pelliccio, President and CEO of Port Newark Container Terminal. “The introduction of Konecranes’ hybrid straddle carriers helps us move toward our long-term environmental objectives while supporting efficient cargo handling.”
At the center of the fleet upgrade are 35 Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers. The first 15 units are now operational and supporting core terminal activities, including ship-to-shore container handling, stacking, intermodal staging and trucking operations. An additional 20 units are scheduled for delivery by end of 2026.
The Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers are engineered to deliver strong performance while reducing fuel consumption and tail pipe emissions. The new units are expected to lower fuel use by approximately 20 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 18 percent, supporting PNCT’s emissions reduction objectives and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s net-zero-by-2050 goal.
Konecranes has supported PNCT for more than two decades as a long-term equipment and service partner with more than 200 straddle carriers delivered to date, as well as Konecranes’ empty container handlers, reach stackers and legacy RTGs, contributing to the terminal’s ongoing modernization, capacity growth, and emissions-reduction roadmap.
“These deployments demonstrate how equipment modernization can support both operational performance and sustainability targets,” said Hubert Foltys, Director at Konecranes. “We are proud to support PNCT as they continue to invest in infrastructure and fleet upgrades that prepare the terminal for long-term growth.”
PNCT’s new maintenance facility and fleet upgrades support its five-year expansion program, which includes increasing terminal capacity, improving intermodal efficiency and enabling the handling of larger vessels.
Together, PNCT and Konecranes are enabling more efficient cargo handling while preparing the terminal for the next phase of its development. A strong focus on customers and commitment to business growth and continuous improvement make Konecranes a material handling industry leader. This is underpinned by investments in digitalization and technology, plus our work to make material flows more efficient with solutions that support the decarbonization of the economy and advance circularity and safety.
